The Met Fifth Ave opens August The Met Cloisters opens September Your health is our top priority. The seven individual hangings known as “The Unicorn Tapestries,” are among the most beautiful and complex works of art from the late Middle Ages that survive. Luxuriously woven in fine wool and silk with silver and gilded threads, the tapestries vividly depict scenes associated with a hunt for the elusive, magical unicorn. In this instance, the unicorn probably represents the beloved tamed.
He is tethered to a tree and constrained by a fence, but the chain is not secure and the fence is low enough to leap over: The unicorn could escape if he wished. Clearly, however, his confinement is a happy one, to which the ripe, seed-laden pomegranates in the tree—a medieval symbol of fertility and marriage—testify. The red stains on his flank do not appear to be blood, as there are no visible wounds like those in the hunting series; rather, they represent juice dripping from bursting pomegranates above.
Many of the other plants represented here, such as wild orchid, bistort, and thistle, echo this theme of marriage and procreation: they were acclaimed in the Middle Ages as fertility aids for both men and women. Even the little frog, nestled among the violets at the lower right, was cited by medieval writers for its noisy mating. On view at The Met Cloisters in Gallery

Simple coin combination questions can be very fun for children to figure out. I have been teaching these for the past 20 years, most recently at my public library job. I am good at giving students just the right amount of hints they might need to figure a question out – and then I’ll ask a slightly more difficult question. I love it when students invent coin combination questions to ask me. Not too difficult, please! My goal is to help youth develop a love of thinking.

With the collapse of the Roman Empire during the 4th—5th centuries, Europe sank into a period in which little furniture, except the most basic, was used: chairs, stools, benches, and primitive chests were the most common items. Several centuries were to pass before the invading Teutonic peoples evolved forms of furniture that approached the Roman standard of domestic equipment. Comparatively little furniture of the medieval period in Europe has survived, and only a handful of these pieces date from before the end of the 13th century.
One reason for this is the perishable nature of wood, but more important is the fact that furniture was made in relatively small quantities until the Renaissance. Much of the earlier history of furniture has to be drawn from contemporary literature, illuminated manuscripts, Romanesque and Gothic sculpture, and later inventory descriptions. There is evidence that certain ancient traditions of furniture making, particularly that of turnery , influenced early medieval craftsmen.

While Japan, China, India and Indonesia have long-standing art-music traditions in which music is performed by a select few well-trained artists , the majority of non-Western societies do not have art music “formal concert” traditions —instead, they perceive music-making as a functional part of everyday life in which the society as a whole participates. Much of this music is improvised and survives solely through oral transmission; thus, it cannot be described in standard Western musical terms, or written down using Western notational symbols.
Such music can only be studied through a painstaking combination of musicological and anthropological means. So, even though a distinction must be made between so-called “art-music” played by professionals vs. Important Musical Considerations in non-Western Music. Most types of Non-Western music are founded on concepts quite different from those of the Western tradition:.
Rhythm Non-Western music especially African can make greater and more creative use of rhythm than Western idioms. Dynamics Non-Western music rarely uses dynamics as an independent concept. Melody Non-Western music often uses microtonal melodic intervals that are smaller or larger than those of the traditional Western scales. Harmony In general, harmony is not as important in non-Western idioms as it is in the West.
Non-Western music may have no harmony at all, or it may base its harmonies on completely different scale systems than Western music. Tone color Though non-Western music is primarily vocal in nature, some cultures have also developed unique independent families of instruments. Colorful percussion sounds, and unique string and wind instruments are most commonly employed.
